Gocek Surroundings and Attractions

Gocek has many advantages that will be your reason for preference compared to other holiday regions. The geographical structure, the safety of the seas, the suitability of the wind and waves for yachting, the historical ruins and the ideal climate of the geographical structure have given the region an important reputation in the world. Gemiler Island is located opposite Gemile Bay and beach, a short distance from the historical Kaya Village.

The old name of the island is St. Nicholas. It is believed that the island was used as a place of worship during the early Christian period and that St. Nicholas lived here. There are remains of churches from the Early Christian and Byzantine periods on the island. The frescoes of the big churches are in good condition and there are the remains of cisterns by the sea. The most interesting historical relic is the tunnel connecting the two churches. Although some parts of the 500-meter-long tunnel have collapsed, there are 17 stops on the staircase inside the tunnel.

These represent the 17 points where Christ stopped as he was taken to be crucified. An earthquake in 240-241 AD caused some of the ruins to slide under the sea to a depth of two meters.
